Taško Theater: musical comedy "America in the Bathhouse"
Amerika pirtyje (America in the Bathhouse) is the first one-act play in Lithuania performed in Lithuanian, based on Keturakis' play of the same name, which, after almost 125 years, has been transformed into a contemporary musical comedy and is now being presented to today's audiences!
The comedy wittily presents the development of Lithuanian identity and a deep spirit of patriotism, the origins of which are often hidden in the most authentic provinces. Set designer Renata Valčik masterfully creates the atmosphere of such a province in the play – car tires are used as furniture, and ingeniously carved and brightly colored swans are a true testament to the artistic tastelessness of the province. The painfully recognizable signs of the contemporary Lithuanian countryside will not only make you smile, but also laugh out loud.
This comedy is accompanied by live music performed by actors, masterfully performed vocal parts, bright costumes and makeup, lots of cheerful improvisation, youthful revelry, lightness, games, and freedom.
However, the main idea remains the same as in Keturakis's time – it's always better where we are not!
