MOTINOS PIENAS (Mother's Milk) based on the novel by Nora
Ikstena (translated from Latvian by Laura Laurušaitė)

Birutė Mar's new play Motinos pienas (Mother's Milk) is based on the novel by the well-known contemporary Latvian writer Nora Ikstena. It is the story of a mother and daughter in Soviet Latvia between 1969 and 1989, as well as the history of the country from Soviet stagnation to the declaration of independence. Everything is very recognizable – the Soviet school, the chilling ruthlessness of the system, and the sense of impending freedom… Also, looking back at the not-so-distant past raises fundamental questions about the state and choices of our contemporary society.

In the play, Birutė Mar plays two roles – mother and daughter. The mother is a doctor, the daughter of an exile, from whom the Soviet authorities take everything: not only her professional future and identity, but also her joy and meaning in life. Her daughter is the opposite of her mother, naturally full of the joy of life. This is a story about the emotional wall of ice that the mother builds around herself to protect her daughter – out of love and a desire to protect her. It is about a lack of love that becomes a salvation; about an environment where everything turns into poison – even a mother's milk.
