SALOS – music and movement installation
This installation is a tribute to the history of our relationship with nature, the present, and the worrying future. SALOS invites you to immerse yourself in a poetic state created by minimalist music, movement, lights, and abstract costumes.
Upon entering the installation space, one is enveloped by a feeling of gradual suffocation – as if one were inside an hourglass. The audience's ears are captivated by meditative music played on sand and cello, and the sounds of a live cello performance. This is a minimalist composition by the renowned composer Žibuoklė Martinaitytė, composed of analog sounds of sand and cello.
Viewers are greeted by human-like figures, but their identities seem to have been erased, their bodies gradually being swallowed up by the sand, creating a sense that disappearance into the sand is inevitable. Inspired by the Curonian Spit, SALOS touches on themes of sustainability, environmental protection, and the future of humanity.
Composer Žibuoklė Martinaitytė has been nominated for the Golden Cross Award in 2021 for her music for the dance and music installation Salos.
PRESS ABOUT THE INSTALLATION
Martinaitytė's music contains a subtle drama that arises from the composer's internal creative processes. This musical principle is perfectly suited to Salos, which addresses difficult topics such as our relationship with nature and the environment, and possible future scenarios determined by humanity's irresponsibility. I would say that the drama of the music is most evident in this work, combined with a rather minimal but clearly arranged choreography, which, like the visual part of the performance, is most interesting to watch from above. Salos is a subtly beautiful picture of sound and movement, like a sketch."
