Klaipėda State Music Theater: G. Donizetti L'ELISIR D'AMORE
A chamber version of a comic opera in two acts
Libretto by Felice Romani, based on Eugène Scribe's libretto for Daniel Auber's opera "Le Boisson"
The comic opera L'elisir d'amore (The Elixir of Love), which made Gaetano Donizetti (1797–1848), a highly prolific 19th-century Italian opera composer who wrote nearly 70 operas, famous (1832) tells the story of Nemorino, a poor, naive young man who is hopelessly in love with the beautiful Adina, who enjoys not only the life of a wealthy heiress, but also the attention of her ever-changing suitors; about the shy lover's plan to follow Tristan's example and win the love of his Isolde by drinking the magical potion mentioned in the legend; about sincere feelings that ultimately overcome all obstacles – the true elixir of love. Of course, the comic plot of the opera would not be complete without the classic love triangle between the soprano, tenor, and baritone, whose role in this opera is played by the self-centered Sergeant Belcore, or without the deus ex machina function performed by the scoundrel Dulcamara. Among other things, it is said that the plot of the opera had real connections with the composer's life, as he was bought out of service in the Austrian army by a wealthy woman, just like Adina Nemorina in the opera… Whatever the circumstances surrounding the creation of this opera, for almost two centuries the bel canto arias and duets of L'elisir d'amore have been making the hearts of opera lovers beat faster in theaters and concert halls around the world, where Nemorino's romance Una furtiva lagrima ("A Secret Tear") remains a favorite among tenors to this day.
