Film Club 8 1/2 | Swedish Film Days: Hilma (Sweden, 2022, 122 min.)
In Hilma, director Lasse Hallström brings to life the story of Swedish painter Hilma af Klint (1862–1944), who changed the art world after her death as one of the first abstract artists. In this captivating biopic, with Tora Hallström playing the young Hilma and Lena Olin playing the mature Hilma, we follow the artist's life from her early years, her emerging artistic career, and her spiritual awakening after the loss of her beloved younger sister Hermina. The film Hilma explores the artist's spirituality, her unconventional love life, and the driving force behind her work—mystical philosophy—creating a portrait of a woman ahead of her time.
