Film Club 8 1/2: Movie Day

17 December 2025 18:00

This year, the world of cinema celebrates an important date – 130 years since the world's first cinema screening took place in Paris on December 28, 1895. As every year, the 8.1/2 cinema club marks this date with significant events. This year, we are also celebrating the centenary of our distinguished filmmaker Adolfas Mekas.
The program includes a screening of his film Hallelujah to the Hills and a discussion about not only Adolfas, but also his equally distinguished brother, avant-garde cinema pioneer Jonas Mekas.
Adolfas Mekas' first feature film, Hallelujah to the Hills, is an experimental romantic comedy that breaks with traditional plot structures and genre boundaries. Two close friends fall in love with the same woman, Vera, but see her in completely different ways. Hallelujah to the Hills is the strangest, most intoxicating, almost crazy comedy of 1963. It is an ironic poem, a wonderfully new experiment and experience in absurd cinema," wrote The Time magazine about the film after its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. The film stands out for its unusual narrative form, surreal images, and the director's ingenuity and humor. The
work of Adofas and Jonas Mekas will be presented and discussed over a cup of coffee by Artūras Jevdokimovas, director and chairman of the Lithuanian Film Center, who knew these filmmakers well.
The pre-holiday mood will be set by classical guitar master Lukas Ichsag. The
activities of the 8.1/2 Film Club are partially funded by the Lithuanian Film Center.
