Dovydas Strimaitis and Lukas Karvelis, two young Lithuanian choreographers and alumni of the prestigious Codarts art school in the Netherlands, will present their internationally acclaimed solo works in a single evening program. In these works, the creators use different artistic languages to explore the individual's relationship with freedom and constraint.

The dance performance Kur krantas (Where the Shore Is) is a contemporary interpretation inspired by Baltic mythology. It contextualizes Lithuanian folklore against the backdrop of contemporary human experiences and explores the relationship between two worlds: the material world, based on logic, and the spiritual world, created by faith and imagination. The starting point for the performance is the legend of Jūratė and Kastytis. Choreographer Lukas Karvelis and dancer Dominyka Markevičiūtė offer a new interpretation of the legend, focusing on Jūratė's inner transformation. It is a journey between freedom and constraint, the limitations of the body and the boundlessness of the imagination. Where is the Shore is a transformative journey of movement, in which the movements gradually become more complex and virtuosic. The dancer finds herself face to face with the rules dictated by the body and space. Complex, meditative, and fluid movements create an allusion to an underwater deity seeking balance, axis, and liberation.
In 2024, Lukas Karvelis was awarded the Golden Cross of the Stage and the Contemporary Dance Association Prize for the choreography of this performance. Dominyka Markevičiūtė was awarded the Contemporary Dance Association's Most Memorable Performer of the Year award.

About the creator

Lukas Karvelis (born in 1997) is an independent Lithuanian dance artist currently living in Amsterdam. In 2019, he graduated from Codarts and won a scholarship from the Jiri Kylián Foundation. He has collaborated with the Royal Danish Theatre, Munich's Kammerspiele, the Gothenburg Opera Dance Company, the Dansatelier team, and Korzo. Awards: 2nd place in the Stuttgarter Solo Competition; nomination for the Piket Kunst Prijs; 2023 – Young Artist Award from the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture.

Hairy 2.0 is a choreographic work for a performer and his hair.
Hair is one of the few parts of the body that we cannot move at will. Meanwhile, dance and choreography can be understood as the art of self-control. Therefore, creating choreography for hair means facing a paradox – trying to give form to something that is essentially uncontrollable. Hairy 2.0 is born out of this tension. Hair, due to its uncontrollable nature, can be perceived as a separate entity, yet dependent on the body. It becomes a boundary that connects and separates us from our surroundings. Choreography for hair raises questions about identity, bodily autonomy, and the extent to which we actually control our own physical presence. Long, freely flowing hair is a recurring symbol of freedom, spontaneity, and romanticism in Western culture. Strimaitis uses these images not as illustrations, but as formal devices—creating oppositions, rhythmic and spatial tensions, and semantic contrasts.

About the creator

Dovydas Strimaitis is a Lithuanian choreographer living and working in France, whose works are characterized by strict structure, precise musicality, and a minimalist yet physically intense movement language. After completing his bachelor's degree in dance at Codarts in Rotterdam, he began his choreographic career while dancing with the National Ballet of Marseille (2019–2022), where he worked with creators such as La Horde, Peeping Tom, Alessandro Sciarroni, Lucinda Childs, and Oona Doherty. In 2021, he presented his first solo work, The Art of Dance Creation. In 2023, his performance Duet won the Golden Cross for Best Choreography of the Year. The project Hairy, which was a finalist in the Danse Élargie competition at the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris, has grown into solo and full-length performances, currently being presented on international stages, including the Théâtre de la Ville, the Actoral (Marseille), RomaEuropa, and Madrid en Danza festivals.
