The Žemaitė Drama Theater of Telšiai: Premiere! “The God of Slaughterhouses” (directed by Badri Tserediani)
“The God of Carnage” is one of the most famous plays by Yasmina Reza, a contemporary French writer, playwright, and actress. It has taken Broadway and the West End by storm and won the prestigious Tony and Laurence Olivier Awards. This work is recognized worldwide as one of the most successful comedies of recent decades, and its well-known film adaptation was directed in 2011 by the legendary Roman Polanski.
The play’s plot revolves around two couples who meet to resolve a completely mundane conflict—their children got into a fight, and one of the teenagers was injured. Although the adults’ meeting begins in a friendly, tolerant, and civilized atmosphere, the children’s argument quickly becomes merely a catalyst. The parents’ own inner crises—deeply hidden alienation, loneliness, and long-suppressed aggression—begin to surface. The masks of politeness fall away, and the peaceful conversation turns into a true existential drama.
This is a sharp satire on contemporary society and a psychological comedy whose main weapons are irony and biting sarcasm. An intellectual yet painfully candid portrayal of the human condition will make every viewer reflect on life’s eternal values.
