LRT investigation “Anatomy of Riots” On August
10, 2021, something happened near the Seimas that had not been seen in Lithuania for more than a decade. A rally of thousands turned into riots. Protesters threw stones and bottles at officers and tore down metal structures. After that night, activists distanced themselves from the unrest. It was publicly stated that no one had expected such a turn of events. Protest activists, officials, politicians, and the president called for a distinction to be made between the two events—the peaceful rally and the nighttime riots. The LRT Investigation Department spent three months analyzing hundreds of hours of video footage, thousands of social media posts, and the connections between rally participants. The investigation showed that the outbreak of violence was planned and that public anger had been stirred up for months. The individuals and radical movements mentioned in the VSD reports took advantage of the heightened emotions. The same organizers and participants were involved in both the rally during the day and the riots at night. The LRT Investigation Department team will participate in the discussion: Mindaugas Aušra, Jurgita Čeponytė, Rūta Juknevičiūtė, Jurga Tvaskienė, and the head of the department, Indrė Makaraitytė. The discussion will be moderated by Šarūnas Černiauskas, a journalist from the investigative journalism center Siena.
Editorial investigation “Nemuno aušra’s money”
The investigation reveals that among the founders, members, and financial supporters of the Nemuno aušra party was a confidant of Russian oligarchs who lived in Russia and held Russian citizenship.
The investigation provides a comprehensive analysis of the Nemuno Aušra party’s finances during the Seimas elections. During the investigation, we reviewed hundreds of documents and thousands of various party payments. We found that unusually large sums were donated to the party by family members, neighbors, business partners, and employees of the party’s campaign manager. The party was also supported by businesses in the elections, even though this is strictly prohibited.
Documentary film “Democracy Noir”
Viktor Orbán has been synonymous with the new European autocracy for several years now. However, Orbán’s regime did not form overnight—Hungarian democracy was killed slowly, with individual elements being eliminated bit by bit. The principles of the rule of law, freedom of speech, human rights – all of this has been slowly Orbanized, turning Hungary into a kind of textbook for other politicians who dream of converting European democracies into autocratic regimes. It is likely that Donald Trump also used Orban’s textbook on killing democracy. We will discuss the manifestations of Orbánisation in Lithuania and ways to resist it after watching the documentary film Democracy Noir, which sheds light on
Hungary’s transformation. About the film: DEMOCRACY NOIR
