The journalism festival “Tiesą sakant” (Truthfully Speaking) is coming to Klaipėda!
Join us for screenings of the investigative journalism and documentary film “Democracy Noir” and discussions with journalists.

LRT investigation “Anatomy of Riots” On August
10, 2021, something happened near the Seimas that had not been seen in Lithuania for more than a decade. A rally of thousands turned into riots. Protesters threw stones and bottles at officers and tore down metal structures. After that night, activists distanced themselves from the unrest. It was publicly stated that no one had expected such a turn of events. Protest activists, officials, politicians, and the president called for a distinction to be made between the two events—the peaceful rally and the nighttime riots. The LRT Investigation Department spent three months analyzing hundreds of hours of video footage, thousands of social media posts, and the connections between rally participants. The investigation showed that the outbreak of violence was planned and that public anger had been stirred up for months. The individuals and radical movements mentioned in the VSD reports took advantage of the heightened emotions. The same organizers and participants were involved in both the rally during the day and the riots at night. The LRT Investigation Department team will participate in the discussion: Mindaugas Aušra, Jurgita Čeponytė, Rūta Juknevičiūtė, Jurga Tvaskienė, and the head of the department, Indrė Makaraitytė. The discussion will be moderated by Šarūnas Černiauskas, a journalist from the investigative journalism center Siena.
Editorial investigation “Nemuno aušra’s money”
The investigation reveals that among the founders, members, and financial supporters of the Nemuno aušra party was a confidant of Russian oligarchs who lived in Russia and held Russian citizenship.
The investigation provides a comprehensive analysis of the Nemuno Aušra party’s finances during the Seimas elections. During the investigation, we reviewed hundreds of documents and thousands of various party payments. We found that unusually large sums were donated to the party by family members, neighbors, business partners, and employees of the party’s campaign manager. The party was also supported by businesses in the elections, even though this is strictly prohibited.
Documentary film “Democracy Noir”
Viktor Orbán has been synonymous with the new European autocracy for several years now. However, Orbán’s regime did not form overnight—Hungarian democracy was killed slowly, with individual elements being eliminated bit by bit. The principles of the rule of law, freedom of speech, human rights – all of this has been slowly Orbanized, turning Hungary into a kind of textbook for other politicians who dream of converting European democracies into autocratic regimes. It is likely that Donald Trump also used Orban’s textbook on killing democracy. We will discuss the manifestations of Orbánisation in Lithuania and ways to resist it after watching the documentary film Democracy Noir, which sheds light on
Hungary’s transformation. About the film: DEMOCRACY NOIR

Klaipėda Youth Theater: play "Waiting for Godot" (directed by P. Pinigis)

06 March 2026 19:00

Waiting for Godot is a play by the Klaipėda Youth Theater based on Samuel Beckett’s famous absurdist play. The only thing that is truly clear in Beckett’s story is waiting. The main characters, Vladimir and Estragon, are waiting for Mr. Godot, whom they want to ask some fundamental questions and request something very important. However, the wait is so long that Vladimir and Estragon eventually forget what they are waiting for and why. While waiting for salvation, they realize that they don’t know what they want to be saved from, who the savior is, or what salvation looks like. But waiting becomes the only hope for the characters in the play to live, even though the meaninglessness of waiting turns into a tragicomic farce.

The performance takes place in an undefined, dreamlike space. Here, time has no “borders” – there is no beginning or end, it is unclear whether time is moving forward or backward, whether it has stopped or is spinning in circles. This uncertainty of time and space further reinforces the absurdity of waiting, but thanks to it, the audience enters the surreal world of the play, where Vladimir and Estragon wander alongside them, waiting for Godot’s answers.

Klaipėda Youth Theater: children's play "OPA! Operation: Recycled Me"

08 March 2026 12:00

An educational play for children aged 5 and up, or a journey through waste.

Educational play for children Ecology is becoming an integral part of our daily lives and thinking, and in the KJT play “OPA! (Operation: Recycled Me!)”, ecological ideas are also making their way onto the children’s theater stage.

The plot of this educational play for children revolves around five pieces of trash that are no longer needed by anyone: a battery, a bag, a magazine, a jar, and a lemon. Although they have all been thrown away, some in a landfill, some by a river, and some in a forest, the pieces of trash feel that their lives are not over yet. Naive but determined, the pieces of trash in the play OPA! (Operation: Recycle Me!) set out to find their destiny – it is unclear whether they will find what they are looking for, what trials they will have to endure, and what awaits them at the end of their journey.

The actors of the Klaipėda Youth Theater not only seek to introduce the audience to playful characters, but also explore the themes of ecology and waste sorting in the play. Is everything we carelessly throw away really worthless? Do we throw it away in the right place? Do we know what impact simple rubbish has on the environment and on ourselves?

The creators of the performance, together with the audience, will try to find answers to these and other questions. The playful theatrical and musical form of the performance is a way to do this, and the cheerful trash characters are our companions in this operation.

Klaipėda Youth Theater: play for children "Twelve from the Mail Coach"

22 February 2026 12:00

The world of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales is familiar and beloved by different generations – these timeless stories accompany grandparents, parents, and children throughout their lives. Knowing this, the actors of the Klaipėda Youth Theater invite you to get to know Andersen’s lesser-known fairy tale “The Twelve from the Mail Coach.”

H. C. Andersen’s fairy tale “The Twelve of the Post Carriage” is included in the collection of the writer’s most beautiful fairy tales and allows us to understand the cyclical nature of life, reminding us of the uniqueness of each season. Although the story begins in winter, on New Year’s Eve, it reveals the uniqueness of each month of the year. It all starts when a mail coach stops at the city gates. Inside are twelve mysterious passengers. They are all different from each other, colorful and special, and more importantly, they bring gifts for the twelve months.

“In this fairy tale, like in a calendar, we can see what we look forward to each year, what repeats itself, and why it is worth waiting for a new beginning every year. Andersen wrote this fairy tale more than 160 years ago – it is very interesting to compare how he imagined the course of the year at that time, how he described the distinctive features of each month. In the performance, we try to supplement this authentic approach with elements of modern life, so that even our youngest viewers can find a connection with each month,” says actress Ieva Pakštytė.

The creative team behind the performance consists of six young theater professionals, all of whom are students of actor and director Valentinas Masalskis from different generations. The actors’ accumulated stage experience will be revealed in all possible aspects in this performance – the team not only creates a dramatic interpretation of the fairy tale, but also takes care of the set design, costumes, and soundtrack themselves.

The performance is recommended for children aged 5 to 12.

Klaipėda Youth Theater: play "Being Alice" (directed by Didier Girauldon)

21 February 2026 18:00

If you ask a random passerby, “What do you know about Lewis Carroll?” you will most likely hear about a little girl, an eternally late white rabbit, and a fantastical world. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, originally titled Alice’s Adventures Under Ground by the author, is a captivating and inexhaustible work. It has been adapted into many genres, such as musicals, contemporary operas, ballets, films, and plays. Behind these adaptations lies a myth, an author, and a story that go far beyond a child’s dream tale. Oxford professor of logic L. Carroll created a world where nonsense and childhood intertwine, raising the question: what remains of Lewis in Alice?

The Klaipėda Youth Theater’s production of “BEING ALICE,” directed by Frenchman Didier Girauldon, is not limited to a mere retelling of the classic tale. The aim is to explore this duality together with the audience, the dialogue between the author and his work, between reality and imagination.

In Lewis Carroll’s work, his ability to reflect the dreamlike nature of existence, reminiscent of Shakespeare’s famous phrase, “the stuff that dreams are made of,” is captivating. This work reveals a subtle distance between words and the multitude of meanings they can acquire, which can be attributed to them like a mask. This play on words and their meanings reveals our most intimate truths, which, like reflections in a mirror, can sometimes be cruel, but are always magnificent. It is a profound questioning of our essence: “to be or not to be” in the presence of others.

Alice in Wonderland, Alice Through the Looking Glass, The Hunting of the Snark, excerpts from the author’s letters, as well as poetic, philosophical, and theatrical texts: these are just some of the sources that are explored, where each actor becomes a storyteller, character, singer, musician, and puppeteer, immersing themselves in the story and bringing it to life. Each scene, each character, each spoken word opens the door to a world of secrets and magic. In joyful chaos, in a moving cabinet of curiosities, the performers, like artists in their studios, will take on the challenges of Alice’s dream-filled universe and its constant metamorphoses.

Director Didier Girauldon is a theater and opera director, actor, producer, and educator who has been involved in international projects in France, England, the United States, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Scotland, and Canada. As a multidisciplinary artist, he explores collective creation, focusing primarily on the dynamics of movement, text, and rhythm.

Teatro del Paso | Tango performance “Emigrantes”

20 February 2026 19:00

Tango performance | Emigrants

This is the second joint creative work by Teatro Del Paso and Trio Unique.

Tango and emigrants are inseparable. Emigrants from Europe played a significant role in the emergence and development of this genre. Spanish habanera and flamenco, German bandoneon, which has now become one of the symbols of tango, Italian melancholic melodies and songs.

The passionate tango dance emerged as a refuge for lonely immigrants who missed their homes and loved ones. Most of the first tango dancers were immigrants seeking a sense of belonging and social interaction. The dance became a way to express the passion, longing, and connection that was missing in their everyday lives. The dance also helped them communicate with each other despite language barriers.

A play about the experiences of emigrants in a foreign land and the influence of those experiences on the development of this wonderful genre.

Klaipėda Youth Theater: play "Kreicerio sonata" (directed by V. Masalskis)

10 February 2026 19:00

Klaipėda Youth Theater | Kreicer’s Sonata

Staging based on Leo Tolstoy’s short story “The Kreutzer Sonata”

Some consider Leo Tolstoy’s short story “Kreutzer Sonata” to be his best work, while others disagree with the ideas expressed in it. This scandalous work combines passionate love, jealousy, and social criticism.

On the train, a conversation begins about love, the status of women, family conflicts, and violence. After remaining silent for a long time, the passenger opens up about his unhappy marriage. He married a much younger woman who captivated him with her youthful beauty and innocence. They had five children. However, the man is disappointed in love and marriage because there is a lot of strife, arguments, and discord in the couple’s relationship. He admits that, overcome with jealousy and hatred because of his wife’s close relationship and music-making with a violinist, he kills her.

The confession of a man who murdered his wife is recounted by Russian literary classic Leo Tolstoy in his novella “The Kreutzer Sonata.” Balancing between feminism and misogyny, the writer touches on several relevant topics: family relationships, gender equality, love, passion, and violence. The published novella caused an international scandal due to its ideas about marriage and family values – it was banned in both Russia and the US.

Kreicerio sonata, which explores human relationships, love, sex, jealousy, and paranoia, is being revived on the stage of the Klaipėda Youth Theater. The story depicts the conflict between sexual desire and moral constraints, raising questions that are often left unspoken, unanswered, or impossible to answer.

Author/Director of the staging: Valentinas Masalskis

Actors: Simonas Lunevičius, Vaiva Kvedaravičiūtė

Set designer: Renata Valčik

Lighting designer: Julius Kuršis

Duration: 1 hour 20 minutes.
